Alexander S. Baena

Abstract:

This study determined the level of competence of tertiary science teachers handling science laboratories in St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD) towards proposing relevant in-service teacher training program. The study utilized the descriptive survey method using a science teaching competency tool. The respondents included selected students and the science instructors of the tertiary level of the university. Employing both quantitative and qualitative research methodology, the study used a structured interview guide, and focus group discussions (FGD) to gather data. There were six areas considered, namely: selection and use of process skills, and innovative science curricular projects, application of laboratory techniques in science teaching, the concept of science teaching and technological literacy, promoting student芒鈧劉s achievement and plan and practical activities. The findings supported the proposed in-service training program on the competencies of teachers handling science laboratories at SPUD.
